Gulf Coast Theatre Review: ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’
FORT MYERS, Fla. —
“Tuesdays with Morrie” delivers an unforgettable blend of tears, laughter, and heartfelt love. Whether you’ve read Mitch Albom’s bestselling book or seen the film adaptation, the stage production at Florida Repertory Theatre brings the story to life with fresh emotional power and fair warning: you may want to bring tissues.
The play centers on journalist Mitch Albom, portrayed brilliantly by Nocolas J. Greco, who pours raw emotion into the role. Mitch begins to question the direction of his own life as he reunites with Morrie Schwartz, his former professor and cherished mentor. Morrie is played with finesse and warmth by Paul Kreppel, who captures both the humor and heartbreak of a man facing the final stages of illness.
Through their weekly Tuesday visits, Morrie offers wisdom about relationships, careers, and the pressures of modern society, reminding audiences of what truly matters most.
I found myself completely immersed in the production, which hit especially close to home as it brought back memories of losing my father to cancer. Morrie, however, is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), and Kreppel is deeply convincing as his physical condition deteriorates, shaking, dropping objects, and eventually struggling for breath. Both Kreppel and Greco deliver emotionally powerful performances as their characters confront life, love, fear, and acceptance together.
The staging is simple and understated. It allows the emotional complexity of the story to take center stage. I appreciated the simplicity as I found the show itself emotionally complicated. The minimal design enhances the intimacy of the two-person play.
Ultimately, “Tuesdays with Morrie” is a reminder for all of us to slow down, appreciate the smallest moments, and live with purpose. It is not just a play, but a true life lesson, one that audiences will carry with them long after the final scene.
Performances have been selling out, and it’s easy to see why: Audiences walk away with one of the most meaningful 90-minute experiences they may ever have in the theater. There is no intermission.
“Tuesdays with Morrie” is playing in the Art Stage Theatre at Florida Rep through March 8. Tickets are still available by calling the box office at 239-332-4488.
