If you’re looking to add a little extra sparkle to your holiday season, head to downtown Fort Myers, where the trial of the season is unfolding on the Florida Rep’s Historic Arcade stage. “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge” asks a question many of us never thought to ask: What happened to Scrooge after he found his Christmas spirit? As it turns out, quite a lot.

This Christmas comedy by Mark Brown serves as a playful sequel to A Christmas Carol, putting a zany twist on Dickens’ beloved classic. And let me tell you, this production is an absolute blast. Florida Rep knows how to put on a show, and they lean all the way into the fun with clever “smoke and mirrors” effects that keep the audience grinning.

The acting is spot on. William McNulty slips into the role of Ebenezer Scrooge like it was made for him and not surprising, considering how often he’s played the iconic role. V. Craig Heidenreich is perfectly cast as Judge Pearson, grounding the courtroom chaos with just the right touch of authority. Jonathan Wiener, as Solomon Rothchild, brings an infectious energy that lights up every scene he’s in as he defends the case’s many… let’s say colorful defendants.

And who’s on the other side of the lawsuit? Oh, just Jacob Marley (played with gusto by Derek Walton) and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Scrooge is suing them all for breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder. So is Scrooge slipping back into his old ways, or is something deeper going on? I won’t spoil the verdict … you’ll have to see for yourself.

While the second act slows down a touch, the show stays entertaining throughout. Viki Boyle brings big laughs as Mrs. Dilber, and Carol Halstead delivers a standout moment as Belle, reminding us why Scrooge’s past still tugs at the heart.

The whole cast shines, making this quirky holiday sequel a delightful addition to your Christmas to-do list. “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge” runs through December 21, and you can snag your tickets by calling the Box Office at 239-332-4488.

If you’re craving a festive night out filled with humor, heart, and just a dash of courtroom mischief, this one’s a must-see. Happy holidays and may your verdict always be merry and bright!
