Gulf Coast Theatre Review: ‘The Rat Pack Lounge’
Gulf Coast Theatre Review: ‘The Rat Pack Lounge’
If you’ve ever wondered what might happen if Sinatra, Martin, and Davis Jr. were given one last shot to fix a mistake on Earth, well, pull up a barstool, grab a drink (yes, on stage), and enjoy the ride.
This jukebox musical serves up a nostalgic premise: the legendary trio is sent back from the great casino in the sky to help Vic Candelino, the down-on-his-luck owner of The Rat Pack Lounge, right a long-overdue wrong.
The three reincarnated crooners are played with genuine flair and reverence. Michael Liebhauser’s Frank Sinatra is no impersonation caricature; he captures “Ol’ Blue Eyes” with relaxed phrasing, spot-on breath control, and that unmistakable baritone. Alex Gossard nails Dean Martin’s smooth swagger and laid-back delivery, while Cole Campbell shines with the vocal flair that made Sammy Davis Jr. such a standout. Together, they’re not just impressions, but loving tributes.
Marc Winski brings both comic timing and surprising heart to Vic, convincingly tone-deaf until he finds his inner Rat Packer. When he finally belts “My Way,” it’s a showstopper. Samantha Stevens is also a welcome presence as Angie, a mysterious visitor with a familiar name (yes, that Angie Dickinson). She adds warmth, sass, and a touch of sparkle to the mix.
The intimate ArtStage Studio is the perfect setting for a show like this. The audience isn’t just watching the performance, but rather they’re in the lounge, and when the bar opens during intermission, let’s just say it’s the classiest cocktail break in town.
Of course, the heart of “The Rat Pack Lounge” lies in the music. The show is packed with swing-era favorites like “Come Fly With Me,” “High Hopes,” and “A Wonderful World,” delivered with affection. Even younger audience members, think Michael Bublé fans or retro TikTokers, will find themselves toe-tapping along with the live three-piece orchestra that never misses a beat.
In short, this show doesn’t just channel the spirit of the Rat Pack; it delivers it, drink in hand. It’s feel-good theater with a wink, a toast.
