FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Did you always want to see the Everly Brothers in concert but never got the chance? Or perhaps you would simply like to become better acquainted with their remarkable music. Either way, “Forever Everly: The Everly Brothers Rockumentary”, now playing at Florida Repertory Theatre in downtown Fort Myers, offers audiences that opportunity.

Nick Gallardo and Jared Mancuso shine as Don and Phil Everly, performing many of the duo’s biggest hits, including “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” and “Cathy’s Clown,” to name just a few. Gallardo and Mancuso harmonize beautifully, capturing the distinctive sound for which the famous brothers became known.

Two large screens help tell the Everly Brothers’ story, from their struggle to make it in the music business and their rise to stardom to the personal and professional conflicts that eventually sent them crashing to rock bottom. The production also chronicles their triumphant reunion and enduring legacy before their deaths.

Lighting designer Charles Clark creatively shifts the production between documentary and live concert. Gallardo and Mancuso perform alongside vintage footage of Don and Phil Everly, including clips from “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The effect often makes it appear as though the performers of today are sharing the stage with the legendary brothers themselves. I loved it.

The show also celebrates the many artists influenced by the Everly Brothers, touching on music by the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Paul Simon. It may be surprising to discover just how many hit songs the brothers recorded until audiences hear them unfold one after another throughout the performance.

But “Forever Everly” is more than a documentary or tribute concert. It is an immersive piece of musical storytelling, and Gallardo and Mancuso convincingly capture both the undeniable chemistry and complicated relationship shared by Don and Phil. Like a concert, the show encourages audience members to sing along, creating an energetic and communal experience.

Packed with classic hits, strong performances and plenty of early rock ’n’ roll energy, Forever Everly is a crowd-pleasing trip down memory lane that should not be missed.

“Forever Everly: The Everly Brothers Rockumentary” runs through Oct. 25 in Florida Repertory Theatre’s ArtStage Studio Theatre. For tickets, contact the box office at 239-332-4488.
