August Wilson’s “Fences” is a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama that follows Tony Maxson, a former star of the Negro leagues now struggling to support his family as a trash collector in 1957 Pittsburgh. He dreamed of being a professional baseball player, but the major leagues were not admitting black athletes. The bitterness from his rejection left his relationships with his wife and teenage son to suffer.

“August Wilson is one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century,” said Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, “and Florida Rep is honored to be taking on one of his most well-known plays. This important, poignant, and heartbreaking drama is one of Wilson’s American Century Cycle plays, and we have assembled an expert cast and creative team to bring this award-winning American story to life for you.”
