Little Shop of Horrors: costume designer

at his core is an anthropologist. He sifts through the lives of the imaginary (sometimes not so imaginary) to piece together developed and personal characters as a part of any collaborative work. He believes the script is the foundation of every good costume design. A fully fleshed out world is written in between the lines of dialogue and nestled between the notes of a score and Michael will always find a way to immerse himself in this world. Most of all, Michael is curious. He approaches the work with an understanding that anything is possible and through collaboration he is able to whittle down endless possibilities into a realized idea. All while preemptively and creatively problem solving as his vision takes shape. Failure is sometimes inevitable, and he learns from those incredible moments while twisting them into something wonderful much like a phrase his mentors use and have taught him: “if you can’t fix it, feature it.” He is always learning, whether it be from those failures or using his curiosity to lead him down a rabbit hole of discovery. He enjoys exploring the interaction of technology and traditional techniques and aims to expand the world of theatre to everyone. Michael believes that quality and equitable theatre are not mutually exclusive and as an advocate for the art form he equips himself with the tools to push the boundaries of artistic excellence and audience accessibility. The process of artistic creation, the product of creative collaboration, and the joy of making ‘magic’ is for everyone – no matter their background.
