Thank God his mother\, sister\, and grandma are all on the case to help him figure out this horrific affliction. Dunk City takes a look at masculinity\, Italian-American families\, and slam dunkin‘ that shit in Staten Island. \nTEN MINUTES ON A BENCH \nby Kenneth Jones\nSponsored by Judy Weiner \nDirected by Stuart Brown | Stage Manager: Arthur D’Alessio*\nStarring: David Breitbarth*\, Rita Cole*\, Jaclynn Haughn\, Ciaran McCarthy*\, Carolyn Messina*\, & Jorge Valero \n \nA dating app called “Ten Minutes on a Bench” is the latest match-making craze\, placing singles on a park bench to find common ground. The clock is ticking\, but there’s no limit to the variety of quirky\, heartbreaking\, and humane conversations between a couple dozen characters looking for love. A new salty-sweet romantic comedy about first impressions\, dogs and cats\, drinkers and smokers\, impulse and caution\, conversation and chemistry — and the universal urge to connect. Sometimes\, it only takes ten minutes. \nMINDING MISS MAE MAE \nby Phillip Christian Smith\nSponsored by Susan B Herbel \nDirected by Karen Stephens | Stage Manager: Khalid Rivera*\nStarring: Patricia Idlette*\, Sonya McCarter\, & Robert Richards \n \nBarbara is Miss Mae Mae’s home health aide. When Barbara’s son Jordan\, a TV star\, comes home ravaged by drug addiction\, the women form their own unconventional rehab to detox him – so he can be ready for the next season of his TV show. Barbara believes in tough love; Miss Mae Mae who is a paraplegic pot smoker\, believes in the Lord. Minding Miss Mae Mae is a biting comedy that tackles difficult issues with heart and humor. \nHOW IT FEELS TO FALL FROM THE SKY \nby Dominic Finocchiaro\nSponsored by Gail D. McClure \nDirected by Greg Longenhagen | Stage Manager: Joy Brooks*\nStarring: Barbara Bradshaw*\, Noah Garcia\, Ashlyn Mullins\, Carolann Sanita\, & Gerritt VanderMeer* \n \nAfter witnessing a woman plummet from the sky\, five strangers in New York form a support group to process what they saw. How it Feels to Fall from the Sky is a melancholic dramedy about loneliness\, loss\, and the unending possibility of salvation inside human connection. In this new play\, five disparate\, emotionally cautious\, and fiercely protective people come together to wrestle with the experience of a shared tragedy\, and they slowly learn to open up\, trust\, connect with\, and ultimately start to heal. This play is a moving and funny piece about letting go and letting in. \nROOM 1214 \nby Michelle Kholos Brooks\nSponsored by Lee Moore & Dee Whited \nDirected by Celine Rosenthal | Stage Manager: Jamie Bryant*\nStarring: Patti Gardner*\, Jaclyn Gossett\, Bryce Hagen\, & Haley Sweat \n \nOn Valentine’s Day 2018\, a nineteen-year-old boy walked into his former high school in Florida\nwith an assault rifle. He killed fourteen students\, three teachers\, and injured seventeen more.\nSome of the worst damage was done when he shot into a Holocaust history class as students were studying hate crimes. Room 1214 is based on interviews with the real-life teacher of that class – who was in the room that fateful day. The play imagines what would happen if she had one more chance to teach in that classroom\, and her students got a final say. It begs the question\, “Can a history teacher rewrite history?” \nMichelle Kholos Brooks returns to the PlayLab after her play Hostage was read in the 2018 Festival. \nPLAYWRIGHT’S PANEL  \n \nFollowing the final reading of the 2024 PlayLab\, audiences will hear from all of the festival playwrights in a roundtable discussion. Moderated by Associate Artistic Director\, Jason Parrish\, the playwrights will talk about their plays\, their work as writers\, and what it takes to make a living as a playwright in the American Theatre. The playwrights will be joined by special guests from the literary world and the National New Play Network. Join us for this one-of-a-kind gathering of professional\, working playwrights. \nShare

SUMMARY:PlayLab: ROOM 1214
DESCRIPTION:by Michelle Kholos Brooks\nSunday\, May 5 | 4 PM \nSponsored by Lee Moore & Dee Whited \nOn Valentine’s Day 2018\, a nineteen-year-old boy walked into his former high school in Florida\nwith an assault rifle. \nTICKETS AND INFORMATION \n\nAll Events held in the Historic Arcade Theatre\nTickets: $30/reading\n\nPACKAGES – See all five readings PLUS the Panel. Please call 239.332.4488. \n\n$150 All Access Pass (Save $30)\n$185 VIP Refreshment Package: Admission to all 6 events and includes one drink (beer/wine/house cocktail/soda) and one concession snack item per reading.\n\nOnline sales close one hour before curtain; in person box office sales are available up to 5 minutes before curtain. \nShare

SUMMARY:LATE NITE CATECHISM
DESCRIPTION:Authors: Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan \nSponsored by Seed & Bean Market \n\n\n\n\n\n2 PM Matinee Performances Wed.\, Thurs.\, Fri.\, Sat. & Sun.\n7 PM Evening Performances on Fridays & Saturdays \nCatechism classes have never been as much fun – or as hilarious – as when they are led by the ‘Sister’ in the international hit comedy\, “Late Nite Catechism.” This uproarious piece of theatre takes audience members back – sometimes nostalgically\, sometimes fearfully – to the children they once were.  The irrepressible Sister  teaches an adult catechism class to a roomful of “students” (the audience).   As the play unfolds\, Sister goes from a benevolent instructor\, rewarding the “students” for correct answers\, to an authoritative drill sergeant.  These attitude shifts are bound to strike a resonant chord with anyone who survived the ups and downs of going to school with an omniscient authoritarian at the helm. \nThe New York Times declared “Late Nite Catechism” speaks to an audience much broader than the membership of any one church.” The Catholic Register (Toronto) says\, “The show appeals to Catholics and non-Catholics alike since ‘Sister’ clearly explains religious references in lighthearted ways while maintaining a serious tone that isn’t too preachy and far from being saccharine.” \nNOTE: Florida Rep is offering “Late Night Catechism” as a special summer production. This play is not part of any subscription package. \nOnline sales close one hour before curtain; in person box office sales are available up to 5 minutes before curtain. \nShare

SUMMARY:Ben Butler
DESCRIPTION:Performances Tuesdays – Sundays \n\nBy Richard Strand \nSponsored by Taylor Carpet One Floor & Home \nMedia Sponsor: WGCU PUBLIC MEDIA \nInspired by true events\, Ben Butler is a Civil War tale packed with surprising humor and wit. When a runaway slave arrives at Fort Monroe demanding sanctuary he forces the newly installed (and unconventional) General Benjamin Butler to face an impossible moral dilemma: follow the law or alter the course of U.S. history. Part satire\, part comedy of manners\, this “battle of wits” tells the true story of how a legal loophole helped win the Civil War. \nRichard Strand’s play is smartly written taking a humorous look at a pivotal moment in history. At its core\, it’s a situational comedy that pokes fun at the societal norms of the day. Characters often engage each other with playful irony creating a brilliant comedic setting for Ben Butler’s dramatic plot to unfold. \n“It’s a funny and impressive mixture… clever without being glib\, meaningful without being pretentious.” –New York Times \n \nVirtual Playbill \nShare
